MONSTER BOBBY As revealed in Pitchfork in mid-October, Monster Bobby has finally got round to doing his debut album, after years in many different bands and as a musician and musical activist in Brighton and New Cross. Entitled Gaps, with a not altogether uncharacteristic irony, the album (Hypnote 2) is set for release on July 17 (August 14th in the UK). Much unlike his live shows, which basically involve Bobby with an acoustic guitar versus Dr. Sample, his electronic foil which seemingly also has a formidable mind of its own, the album instead features an ambitious assemblage of musicians and instrumentation (bassoon, glockenspiel, tuba, cornet for a start). The album takes the pop sensibilities for which he is well-known and a bit of the "oddball singer/songwriter", whilst channeling in the spirits of early British folk as well as the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, the groundbreaking consortium of electronic music pioneers that Bobby has extensively studied and interviewed over the years and will be essaying in the upcoming book "Hauntologies". According to Bobby, who tends to speak in lower-case letters: "so the irony (not foreseen at the time i came up with the title) of an album called gaps is that one of its notable features will be, precisely, the almost complete absence of any gaps between tracks, each one segued into the next with the aid of field recordings and other assorted noises and soundscapes. there are 17 tracks, they are as follows: 1. fresh start all songs written by monster bobby, recorded and mixed by kit mason in brighton at brickhouse studios, the black bunker and kit's bedroom between november 2006 and february 2007." |
